Church of Santo Adriano de Tuñón Monument · Santo Adriano, Oviedo, Asturias The church of Santo Adriano de Tuñón, in the Asturian parish of Tuñón, concejo of Santo Adriano, is a pre-Romanesque temple founded by Alfonso III the Great and his wife Jimena on 24 January 891, dedicated to the martyrs Adriano and Natalia and to the apostles Pedro, Pablo and Santiago. With a basilical plan of three naves separated by round arches on pillars without capitals, it has a triple flat-ended head with barrel vaults and retains original mural paintings, rediscovered between 1949 and 1954 under the direction of Luis Menéndez Pidal, among them the allegories of the Sun and the Moon in the central chapel. It underwent a documented renovation in 1108 and another between the 17th and 18th centuries, which added the present bell-gable and west front. It was declared a Monumento Nacional (a Spanish heritage-protection designation) in 1931. Photo: Adolfobrigido (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Santo Adriano
