First Descent of the Sella Historical milestone · Parres, Oriente, Asturias Image of Parres, not of the place itself. Dionisio de la Huerta and two companions from Infiesto completed the first canoe descent in 1930, giving rise to the Descenso Internacional del Sella; since 1932 the race has started in Arriondas and finished in Ribadesella. Popularly known as Las Piraguas, it is held on the first Saturday in August after the 2nd, along 20 kilometres of the Sella river, and has been declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (official distinction for festivals of tourist interest in Spain) since 1980; only in 1992 was it postponed by a week because it coincided with the Barcelona Olympic Games. 1930 Photo: gesoe62 (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Parres
