Historic ensemble of Villaviciosa Curiosity · Villaviciosa, Gijón, Asturias Image of Villaviciosa, not of the place itself. Alfonso X granted a founding charter to the Pobla de Maliayo on 17 October 1270, ordering that the settlement be established from the place called Buetes; thus present-day Villaviciosa was born. The town was enclosed by a wall, of which remains are still preserved at the crossing of some streets, and by four gates of which sections survive. In 1484 a fire completely destroyed the capital, and the Catholic Monarchs issued a document granting funds to rebuild the whole area.
