Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor Monument · Pravia, Avilés, Asturias The collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor is a Baroque parish temple in the town of Pravia, in the Asturian concejo of the same name, presiding over the historic center of the lower Nalón. It was founded in 1715 by Fernando Ignacio de Arango Queipo, who, after accompanying his uncle, archbishop of Charcas, in the viceroyalty of Peru, vowed to build it in honor of the Virgen del Valle, patroness of his home town, after surviving a storm during a crossing to the Philippines. Around the church he had a square laid out with the palace of Moutas and eight canons' houses. The stone building has a plan of three naves and a transept topped by a hemispherical dome, nine altarpieces, and was consecrated in 1727; the main altarpiece brings together the images of the Virgen del Valle and the Assumption.
