International River Descent of Galiana Street Activity · Avilés, Avilés, Asturias Image of Avilés, not of the place itself. The Descenso Internacional y Fluvial de la Calle de Galiana has been held on the Saturday of Avilés's Antroxu carnival since 1988 and is one of the most characteristic events of the town's carnival, setting it apart from the rest of northern Spain's carnivals. The most outlandish event of the Avilés Antroxu: la calle Galiana fills with foam and participants launch homemade boats down the slope, in a race that is at once a costume parade and a water battle. The town council places foam and water cannons at various points along the street, and a jury awards the boats according to their originality, the effort involved and the staging.
