Municipality split off from Gernika-Lumo in 1987 to become an independent municipal government again. It has 311 inhabitants (INE, 2025) and lies right at the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. It is home to Astilleros de Murueta, S.A., a shipyard building fishing and merchant vessels up to 130 meters long, specializing in freezer tuna boats.
