What to see and do in Gernika-Lumo

Gernika-Lumo
Village
Town founded on April 28, 1366 by Tello de Castilla, infante and Lord of Vizcaya, on land belonging to the anteiglesia of Lumo; the founding charter already mentions the "port of Guernica" and trade exemptions. It is the historic seat of the Juntas Generales de Vizcaya (General Assembly of Vizcaya). It has 17,129 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
Casa de Juntas y Árbol de Gernika
Historical milestone
The present-day Casa de Juntas (Assembly House), in Neoclassical style, was built between 1826 and 1833 to a design by Antonio de Echevarría. Next to it stands the Tree of Gernika, an oak that symbolizes the Bizkaian foral liberties, under which the lordship's laws were sworn and promulgated until 1876, when the abolition of the fueros ended that legislative use. It remains the place where the lehendakari (President of the Basque Government) is sworn into office. Both the Casa de Juntas and the tree survived the 1937 bombing unscathed.
Bombardeo de Gernika
Historical milestone
On April 26, 1937, during the Civil War, the town was bombed for several hours by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria, in support of the insurgent side; more than 85% of the town was destroyed. The death toll is the subject of intense historiographical debate: the Basque Government initially gave a figure of 1,654 dead, later revised to 592; later research (Cástor de Uriarte, and studies cited by historians such as Beevor or Payne) puts the figure between 150 and 300 dead, while historian Xabier Irujo has argued in recent works for figures close to 2,000. The discrepancy is explained in part by the propagandistic use of the event by both sides. The bombing inspired Pablo Picasso's painting "Guernica", painted for the 1937 Paris International Exposition.
Iglesia de Santa María de Gernika
Monument
Gothic church located at the highest point of the town, completed in 1715.
Parque de los Pueblos de Europa
Monument
Park housing sculptures by Eduardo Chillida ("Gure Aitaren Etxea") and Henry Moore.
Museo de la Paz de Gernika
Monument
Museum dedicated to the history of the 1937 bombing and to the culture of peace.
Frontón Jai Alai de Gernika
Monument
World-renowned fronton for Basque pelota, built in 1963 by the architect Secundino Zuazo.
Fundación de la villa de Gernika

Fusión de Luno y Gernika
