What to see and do in Gordexola

Gordexola
Village
Municipality of the Encartaciones organized into five parishes (Irazagorría, El Pontón-Urarte, Sandamendi, Zubiete, and Zaldu), documented as an entity since the 14th century and crossed by the Herrerías or Ibaizabal river. Its old Castilian name, "Gordejuela," is still used in some sources alongside the official form "Gordexola." It experienced economic expansion in the 17th-18th centuries tied to its ironworks and maize cultivation, declining in the 19th century with the industrialization of Bilbao. Around 1847 it had about 1,500 inhabitants; today it has 1,720 (INE, 2025).
Convento de Santa Isabel
Monument
A Franciscan convent in Gordexola founded as a beaterio around 1450 and turned into an enclosed convent in 1618.
La Feria de San Andrés de Gordexola
Historical milestone
During the 17th and 18th centuries Gordexola was an important trading hub between Bilbao and Castile, with its San Andrés Fair as an example of that activity, until Bilbao's growth in the 19th century drew away population and led to the town's industrial decline.
