What to see and do in Garai

Garai
Village
Small municipality of the Duranguesado, at the foot of Mount Oiz, whose origin goes back to the 11th century as one of the towns of the Duranguesado. It changed its official form from "Garay" to "Garai" in the 1990s. It preserves two old parish churches, dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel and San Juan Evangelista (the latter, from the 16th century, no longer in use for worship), and several hermitages, including that of San Juan Bautista de Momoitio, next to which a medieval necropolis was uncovered in 2009. It has around 300 inhabitants.
Necrópolis medieval de Momoitio
Historical milestone
Necropolis discovered in excavations carried out between 1982 and 1985 next to the hermitage of San Juan Bautista de Momoitio, with burials dated between the 9th and 10th centuries. The site was restored in 2009 as part of the "Aostarri" project.
El roble singular de Etxeita
Nature
Next to the Etxeita farmhouse in Garai grows an oak of great age and size, protected by the Basque Government as a singular tree; local tradition says a flock of 300 sheep could fit under its canopy.
La familia Zubiaurre de Garai
Curiosity
Garai was the birthplace of the Zubiaurre family: the composer Valentín Zubiaurre (1837-1914) and his children, the painter Ramón Zubiaurre (1882-1969) and the feminist writer Pilar Zubiaurre (1884-1970).
