Town whose founding was confirmed on January 20, 1372 in Burgos by the Lord of Vizcaya Juan I of Castile (the exact founding date is uncertain, placed between 1140 and 1383). It was a center of arms manufacturing from the 15th century: a factory producing hand cannons and firearms is already documented in 1516, an activity that continued until production moved to Asturias during the War of the Convention (1794). It has 15,516 inhabitants (INE, 2025).
