On 4 March 1375 the infante Juan, Lord of Vizcaya, ordered the settling and walling of the town at the site of Ugao, under the name Villanueva de Miraballes. The current hybrid name, combining the Basque term 'Ugao' with the Spanish 'Miraballes', was officially adopted in 1986.
