On 4 February 1967, María Teresa Ibarguchi Barrondo became mayor of Ubide. The press of the time presented her as the first woman mayor in Spain, a claim later research has qualified after documenting earlier women mayors in other municipalities, such as Dolors Codina in Talladell (Lleida) since 1924.
