Otxandio is first mentioned in the fuero of Durango, granted in 1155; it received its own founding charter (carta puebla) between 1236 and 1254, becoming one of the fourteen villas that, together with the city of Orduña and the Tierra Llana, made up the Lordship of Vizcaya.
