The city saw the birth of the three Maeztu siblings: the painter Gustavo de Maeztu (1887), the essayist Ramiro de Maeztu, a figure of the Generation of '98 executed by firing squad in 1936 at the start of the Civil War, and the educator María de Maeztu, driving force behind Madrid's Residencia de Señoritas.
