On 21 June 1813 the French troops escorting Joseph Bonaparte were defeated near Vitoria by an allied Spanish-British-Portuguese army under Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington; the victory led to the definitive withdrawal of Napoleonic troops from Spain, except from Catalonia.
