The municipality of Iruraiz-Gauna was born on 29 December 1966 from the merger of the municipalities of Iruraiz and Gauna, officially established on 5 February 1967; Iruraiz came from the old Hermandad de Iruraiz, which grouped together eighteen settlements in the 13th century.
