Municipality of 2,921 inhabitants (INE, 2025) made up of 24 population centers, whose capital is Respaldiza/Arespalditza. The name Ayala is first documented in the 10th century. The present-day municipality brings together much of the old Tierra de Ayala, which until 1842 had an administration separate from that of Álava and Vizcaya, almost as its own señorío of the Crown of Castile.
