The arrival of the caravel Pinta Historical milestone · Baiona, Vigo, Pontevedra The caravel Pinta, commanded by Martín Alonso Pinzón, separated from Columbus's expedition by a storm during the return voyage, arrived at the port of Baiona on 1 March 1493, even before Columbus reached Palos with the Niña; the Galician town thus became the first place in Europe to learn the news of the discovery of the New World. Rodrigo de Triana had sailed on that same ship, the sailor who on 12 October 1492 first sighted American land. Ever since it was declared an official local festival in 1974, Baiona has re-enacted every year, at the Festa da Arribada, a medieval market and the dramatized arrival of the caravel; a replica of the Pinta, today housed in a museum, is kept in the town's port. 1 de marzo de 1493 Photo: Alejandro Arce Herrero (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in Baiona
