Suído shepherd huts Monument · Covelo, Paradanta, Pontevedra The chozos do Suído are dry-stone gneiss constructions with a square floor plan of about twenty square metres, walls up to 0.8 metres thick and a gabled roof supported by one to three round arches, topped with slabs, earth and moss to insulate the interior; inside they preserve a hearth (lareira), an oven and cupboards, and a small opening lets smoke out and sunlight in. Probably built from the 12th century onwards by the shepherds of Avión, Beariz, A Lama, Fornelos de Montes, Ribadavia and Covelo, they stand at about 900 metres of altitude, on south-facing slopes sheltered from the north winds, and were in use until the last century between June and September, when livestock climbed to the sesteiros of the brañas of the Suído. Alongside them cortellos and stone curros are also preserved. Photo: Edoarado (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Covelo
