Tower of a Homenaxe de Viana do Bolo Monument · Viana do Bolo, Viana, Ourense The only remnant of the medieval castle, this square tower of about 33 metres high dates back to the 9th century, when it was raised for defence against the Muslims; destroyed and rebuilt in 1180 by order of Ferdinand II, it was rebuilt again in the 15th century after successive conflicts. Philip II made it the seat of a marquisate in favour of Pedro Pimentel, who placed on it the coat of arms that still adorns the façade today. It retains the entrance door to the parade ground and the one to the courtyard of honour, and during the 19th-century Carlist wars it was again the scene of clashes; during the civil war it served as a prison. Declared a historic-artistic monument in 1949, it today houses the Viana ethnographic museum. Photo: Antonio Costa (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Viana do Bolo
