Carnival of Viana do Bolo Activity · Viana do Bolo, Viana, Ourense Carnival of Viana do Bolo, the oldest and most traditional in the area, declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Galicia (Festival of Tourist Interest of Galicia); its central figure is the boteiro, a black-faced masked figure who clears the way with great leaps supported by the monca, accompanied by the folións, percussion troupes that ward off meigas and meigallos. The calendar opens with Compadres Thursday, when the men throw flour at the women, and continues with Comadres Thursday, with the roles reversed; Fat Sunday brings the great parade of floats and troupes, with a lunch whose centrepiece is the androlla, and Shrove Tuesday of the Entroido closes it with a flour battle and the night-time burning of the Lardeiros. Its origins are unknown for lack of documentation, though one theory places them in pre-Roman agricultural rites. Photo: Jorjum (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Viana do Bolo
