Tower of Cumbraos Monument · Monterroso, Ulloa, Lugo Image of Monterroso, not of the place itself. The tower of Cumbraos, rectangular in plan, with two storeys, a basement and a four-sloped roof, was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by order of Álvaro Gaioso y Osorio beside the church of San Martín de Cumbraos, with which it forms an architectural ensemble. The church, of Romanesque origin, preserves its triumphal arch, its round-arched doorway and several corbels with varied decoration. The place-name Cumbraos recalls the ninth- and tenth-century settlement of people who had come from Coimbra. The ensemble is one of the clearest examples of the seigneurial defensive architecture of Monterroso. Photo: José Antonio Gil Martínez from Vigo, Spain (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in Monterroso
