Fortress of the Castro de Amarante Monument · Antas de Ulla, Ulloa, Lugo The Noguerol, counts of Amarante, built this fortress in the thirteenth century over an earlier castro; in the seventeenth century a pazo of the same family was added onto it, its coats of arms bearing the lineage's arms still visible on the walls. It stands in the parish of Santo Estevo do Castro de Amarante, whose place-name recalls precisely the old castro settlement on which it sits; the place today has a little over a hundred inhabitants and celebrates its festivals in honour of san Francisco, san Bartolomé and santo Estevo.
