Bean of Lourenzá Curiosity · Lourenzá, Mariña Central, Lugo Image of Lourenzá, not of the place itself. Faba de Lourenzá, a bean covered by a protected geographical indication, benefits from the valley's continental climate, with abundant rainfall of 1,200 to 1,400 millimetres a year and mild temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees, and from the area's loamy and silty loam soils. Its market has been documented since the 18th century, with fairs on the 9th and 28th of every month, and it gained importance in the 1970s and 1980s amid the decline of the dairy sector; since the creation of the Festa da Faba in 1990 a market became established that by the early 21st century reached 600 tonnes of annual trade. It is grown in the faba galaica and faba do marisco varieties, and is sold dry, whole, clean and separated from the pod after harvest.
