The Jacobean Route of the Sea of Arousa and Ulla Activity · Dodro, Sar, A Coruña The Ruta do Mar de Arousa e Ulla, or Ruta Marítima Xacobea, commemorates the arrival by sea of the beheaded body of the apostle Saint James in Galicia, after his martyrdom in Jerusalem by order of Herod Agrippa I in the year 44. According to the legend recorded in medieval texts, his disciples carried the body across the Mediterranean and the Iberian Atlantic coast to Iria Flavia in a stone boat, which they moored at Padrón after the crossing. The annual commemoration, promoted by the Fundación Ruta Xacobea do Mar de Arousa e Ulla, goes up the ria of Arousa and the Ulla river and is held in late July or early August; whoever completes it does not receive the Compostela, but the Diploma Traslatio Xacobea.
