The French Way is the most heavily travelled Jacobean route in Spain, the trunk route into which pilgrims arriving by other paths flow along its course, and it forms part of the GR-65 Long-Distance Trail and the E-3 European Path. In its broadest sense it begins on French soil, beyond the Roncesvalles pass, at the confluence of the three Jacobean routes coming from Tours, Vézelay and Le Puy-en-Velay, and crosses Navarre, La Rioja, Castile and Galicia before entering Santiago de Compostela via the Monte do Gozo and the Porta do Camiño to end in the Plaza del Obradoiro. Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1993, it is also a European Cultural Route.
