What to see and do in Boqueixón

Boqueixón
Village
Boqueixón is a municipality of about 4,200 inhabitants in the Santiago comarca, in the province of A Coruña, bordering Santiago de Compostela, only eight kilometres from the Galician capital. It lies on the river Ulla, which forms the boundary with the province of Pontevedra, and is dominated by Pico Sacro, a 534-metre hill linked to the legend of the Apostle's translation; the seat of the municipality, O Forte, stands at 305 metres above sea level. The municipality is organised into fourteen parishes and one hundred and three population entities, among them Lestedo, where the filloa festival is held every year. Part of Santiago de Compostela airport lies within its municipal district.
Chapel of San Sebastián do Pico Sacro
Monument
The capela de San Sebastián, on the southern slope of the Pico Sacro (Boqueixón), has a rectangular floor plan with a gabled roof and is the last remnant of the monastery founded by Bishop Sisnando in the year 911. Despite reforms in the 19th and 20th centuries it preserves a 12th-century altar stone and Romanesque columns. A pilgrimage is held there every 20 January.
Pico Sacro
Nature
The Pico Sacro is a peculiarly shaped mountain in the parish of Granxa, in Boqueixón, cited as Mons Illicinus in the Codex Calixtinus for its role in the story of the transfer of the body of the apostle St James to Galicia. It is a 533-metre quartz vein, isolated from other mountains, whose pointed shape stands out above the river Ulla. Its ridge is divided by a ditch, probably artificial, called the Rúa da Raíña Lupa; at the summit the foundations of a fortress rebuilt by Archbishop Fonseca in 1473 are still visible. A narrow cave runs through the summit, and Jacobean tradition places there a dragon guarding an entrance to hell. Below the summit stands the hermitage of San Sebastián, founded in the 10th century as a Benedictine cenoby by Sisnando I. A pilgrimage with mass is held at the hermitage every 20 January.
The Floats of San Cidre
Activity
A parade of floats built by the parishes of the concello for the festival of San Isidro, declared of tourist interest of Galicia; each committee works for months on its assembly and decoration.
Festival of a Filloa de Lestedo
Activity
A gastronomic festival held since 1984 in the parish of Lestedo, in the concello of Boqueixón in the province of La Coruña, on the Sunday following Shrove Tuesday; it arose from the residents' decision to revive a tradition of the Ulla comarca and extend the entroido festivities, whose central figures are the Altos Xenerais e Correos. In 2008, on its 25th edition, it was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Galicia (a Spanish official designation for festivals of touristic interest). It draws thousands of visitors around the filloa, the Galician crepe made of flour, egg and milk or broth -at home it was made with the broth from the pig slaughter-, cooked there in iron filloeiras over the embers and enjoyed plain, with honey, or rolled up. Since 2004 a machine capable of producing up to 1,600 filloas an hour without altering the recipe has been used.
