Castle of San Xurxo Monument · Carnota, Muros, A Coruña The castelo de San Xurxo, an episcopal fortress built on the granite massif of Monte Pindo, in Carnota, was founded or refounded in the 10th century by Bishop Sisnando II as part of the defence of the Galician coast against Norsemen and Arabs, also protecting access to Santiago de Compostela. Considered one of the oldest stone castles in Galicia and one of the few never conquered, it stood on the steep Pico Pedrullo, at 300 metres, with several watchtowers and a keep that dominated the coast between the capes of Touriñán and Corrubedo. Around it the Carnota revolt against ecclesiastical lordship broke out; in the early 14th century its tenant asked the Church for permission to demolish it, and its ruins, never excavated, were reduced to rubble.
