Ponte Maceira Monument · Negreira, Barcala, A Coruña The bridge of A Ponte Maceira, with five arches over the Tambre, the central one pointed and with a span of fourteen metres, was built between the 13th and 14th centuries at the will of Compostela's ecclesiastical power, connecting the comarcas of A Maía and Barcala and serving as a crossing on the main route of the Camino de Santiago towards Finisterre and Mugía. In the 18th century the enlightened José Cornide described it as having seven arches and in a precarious state, the three closest to the right bank Gothic and older and the other four round-arched and more modern; in 1792 its ruin was recorded, which prevented its use until the early 19th century, when it was restored at the town councils' expense. It partially collapsed in 1987, was restored by the Xunta between 1991 and 2001, and has been a listed monument since 2022.
