Village of Ponte Maceira Curiosity · Negreira, Barcala, A Coruña A hamlet in the parish of Portor, at the eastern edge of the concello of Negreira, crossed by the río Tambre, with barely sixty-odd residents and thousands of visitors a year; it has featured since 2019 on the list of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España. It preserves a monumental ensemble made up of the original settlement, an old mill, a weir, a chapel, a modern pazo and the Maceira bridge, built over the Tambre in the thirteenth century using the piers of an earlier Roman bridge. It was an obligatory crossing point on the maritime Way of St James to Fisterra, and a legend from the Codex Calixtinus tells that the bridge collapsed after the Apostle's disciples had crossed it and before the Roman legionaries pursuing them could do so, which has been recorded on the concello's coat of arms since 1866.
