A 13th-century infante, half-brother of King Alfonso IX of León, who fortified the castle of Cañamero in 1220 and died that same year, on 25 August, as a result of a bear attack. In 1538 the town was declared a villa exenta, separating from the jurisdiction of Trujillo.
