Historical milestone
Founded as a colonization settlement (formerly 'Alagón del Caudillo') to resettle the population of Granadilla and Martinebrón, submerged beneath the waters of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir. It was administratively dependent on Galisteo from 1979; a 1995 referendum (90% turnout, 85% in favor) started its separation, and it became independent as Alagón del Río under Decree 158/2009 of the Junta de Extremadura, effective in November 2009.
