What to see and do in Zarza de Granadilla

Zarza de Granadilla
Village
Municipality of 1,815 inhabitants (2025), 133.70 km² and 399 m altitude. Its origin goes back to the Roman villa of Villoria; medieval repopulation followed the conquest of Granada (present-day Granadilla) by Fernando II of León in 1160. In 1965 its territory was expanded following the construction of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir, which flooded part of the surroundings of the deserted village of Granadilla, today part of this municipality.
Pueblo deshabitado y castillo de Granadilla
Monument
Old town founded by the Muslims in the 9th century as a stronghold; conquered in 1160 by Fernando II of León, it passed to the Dukes of Alba in 1446, who built the castle between 1473 and 1478, with a central prismatic body and four semicylindrical towers. On June 24, 1955, the town was expropriated by the State ahead of the construction of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir, although it has never actually been flooded even with the reservoir full. It was declared a conjunto histórico-artístico in 1980 and has been progressively restored ever since; its former residents gather twice a year for commemorative reunions.

In 1160 Fernando II reconquered the hamlet of Granada for the kingdom of León, which received town status in 1170; from 1446 the lordship belonged to the Dukes of Alba, and the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental (a royal droving route) passed through its municipal area, making La Zarza a resting stop for transhumant flocks.
