Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor Monument · Trujillo, Comarca de Trujillo, Cáceres Late Romanesque-style church begun in the 13th century, possibly on the site of the city's old aljama mosque, rebuilt and expanded in Gothic style between the 15th and 16th centuries. It was Trujillo's highest-ranking religious building, with an almost cathedral-like status. Its Romanesque tower (the "Torre Julia") suffered damage and was rebuilt when it was declared a monument in 1943; under the terminology in force between 1931 and 1985, the correct protective category for that date is monumento histórico-artístico, although some sources imprecisely refer to it as "monumento nacional". It preserves a 16th-century main altarpiece. siglo XIII (inicio); siglos XV-XVI (ampliación gótica); 1943 (declaración de monumento histórico-artístico) Photo: Jl FilpoC (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Trujillo
