Atop the hill overlooking the town, about 62 km from Cáceres, remains survive of a hillfort occupied by pre-Celtic, Celtiberian, Lusitanian and Vettone peoples, along with a necropolis and a castle from the Muslim period with its cistern at the highest point. At the foot of the hill lie the ruins of a 17th-century Augustinian convent.
