Church declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, Spain's highest level of heritage protection, begun on 30 January 1545 by the Trujillo-born master builder Sancho de Cabrera, at the request of Bishop Gutierre de Vargas Carvajal, and completed under Pedro Ponce de León between 1560 and 1573.
