Pedro Alonso de Centenera accompanied Pizarro in the conquest of Cuzco and was its mayor until 1555; Alonso Álvarez de Pineda (b. 1494) explored the Gulf of Mexico and founded Corpus Christi, in Texas. Both gave their name to the village, formerly Ejido de Centenera.
