The settlement arose as a dependency of Plasencia shortly after the latter's founding in 1186. According to local tradition, its first settlers, who were also religiously dependent on the city, decided to become independent by transferring the image of Saint John the Baptist from the church of San Juan in Plasencia to Malpartida's original hermitage, on which the present-day parish church would later be built.
