What to see and do in Peraleda de la Mata

Peraleda de la Mata
Village
Municipality of 1,444 inhabitants (2025), 92.06 km² and 341 m altitude, which once had 3,560 inhabitants in the mid-19th century; the construction of the Valdecañas reservoir in the 1960s caused heavy emigration. It preserves the Renaissance church of Santiago Apóstol (16th century) and the hermitage of the Cristo de la Humildad.
Dolmen de Guadalperal
Monument
Megalithic monument from between the fifth and third millennia BC, with more than 140 granite slabs, a funerary chamber about 5 m in diameter, and a passage nearly 10 m long, popularly known as the 'Spanish Stonehenge'. It remained visible for about forty years after its discovery until the waters of the Valdecañas reservoir covered it in 1963; since then it has reappeared intermittently during the most severe droughts, as in July 2021 and the summer of 2022.
Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol de Peraleda
Monument
16th-century Renaissance church with a Gothic vault and an altarpiece some attribute to the Churriguera school.
Ermita del Cristo de la Humildad
Monument
18th-century Baroque hermitage housing the image of Peraleda de la Mata's patron saint, with an altarpiece in post-Churrigueresque style.
Descendimiento de Cristo en Peraleda de la Mata
Activity
Re-enactment of the Descent from the Cross with an articulated carving, a tradition alive since the 17th century during Peraleda's Holy Week.
Epidemia de cólera de 1855 en Peraleda
Historical milestone
A cholera epidemic decimated Peraleda de la Mata's population in 1855; the village had as many as 3,560 inhabitants in 1849, far above the barely 1,444 it has today.
