Montijo
Village
Municipality of 15,198 inhabitants (2025) at 201 m altitude, halfway between Mérida and Badajoz on the right bank of the Guadiana. Philip III granted the title of county of Montijo on 13 December 1599. On 13 August 1936 the town was taken by the troops of lieutenant colonel Juan Yagüe, followed by harsh repression.
De los condes de Montijo a la emperatriz Eugenia
Historical milestone
The 6th Countess of Montijo was the mother of Cipriano Palafox, whose daughter Eugénie de Montijo became Empress of France by marrying Napoleon III. The noble title, originally tied to this town, is the reason the name Montijo reached the French imperial court.
