Origen del nombre de Tentudía Historical milestone · Calera de León, Tentudía, Badajoz Image of Calera de León, not of the place itself. Tradition places here, in the 13th century, a battle fought by the Master of the Order of Santiago, Pelay Pérez Correa, against a Muslim army during Fernando III's campaign to conquer Sevilla; according to legend, the sun stopped in the sky ('detente, sol' or 'ten, sol, día', roughly 'stop, sun' or 'sun, hold the day') to allow the Christian victory, the origin of the place name of the entire Tentudía comarca. A church was built to commemorate this, raised to the rank of monastery by Pope Leo X in 1514.
