What to see and do in Táliga

Táliga
Village
Municipality of 650 inhabitants (INE 2025) at 315 m altitude, in the Llanos de Olivenza comarca. It was part of Portugal, under the jurisdiction of Olivenza, for more than five centuries, until its incorporation into Spain in 1801; it was split off from Olivenza as its own parish around 1850. As with Olivenza, Portugal does not officially recognize Spanish sovereignty, invoking the 1815 Congress of Vienna, although it does not dispute it actively.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Monument
The main religious and architectural landmark of Táliga, belonging to the archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz.
Incorporación de Táliga a España
Historical milestone
Táliga was part of Portugal for more than five centuries, until its incorporation into Spain in 1801 through the Treaty of Badajoz. Portugal did not formally recognise this sovereignty at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, though the matter has remained a diplomatic dispute with no practical consequence.
