Construction of a nuclear power plant began in 1975, involving more than 4,000 workers; the 1984 nuclear moratorium imposed by the Socialist government halted the works when the first reactor was 70% complete and the second 60%. The facilities were dismantled in 2001, leaving a public debt of around 116 million euros.
