On December 31, 1931, during a demonstration of day laborers called by the Federación Nacional de Trabajadores de la Tierra, a clash with the Guardia Civil ended with the deaths of four guards and one demonstrator, an episode that historian Paul Preston frames within the repression of peaceful protests after months of labor unemployment.
