The Special Protection Area for Birds Alto Turia y Sierra del Negrete, reference ES0000449, was declared in 2009 as part of the expansion of the Comunitat Valenciana's SPA network, and includes the Sabinar de Alpuente and the Alto del Viso micro-reserve, in the Los Serranos district. It partly coincides with three former Sites of Community Importance: Alto Turia, with gallery forests and steep rocky outcrops; Sabinar de Alpuente, with formations of Spanish juniper, Scots pine and creeping savin juniper; and Sierra del Negrete, with continental holm-oak woods, black pine and mixed quejigo oak woods. It is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000.
