Fontanars dels Alforins
Village
Fontanars dels Alforins is a municipality in the comarca of La Vall d'Albaida, in the province of Valencia, with a winemaking tradition, and 936 inhabitants. It sits on a plateau known as Los Alhorines, between the Sierra Grossa and the Sierra de Agullent, with heights exceeding 900 metres, such as the Replana, the highest point in the municipal term. The name Alforins comes from the Arabic al-hurí, granary, recalling the intense cereal farming of the Andalusi period, while Fontanars refers to an old district of Ontinyent and to the springs found there; the current name was adopted in 1992. The territory preserves remains from the Chalcolithic to the Roman period, including an Iberian settlement at the Camí de Mallaura and a Roman necropolis at the Racó de Sanxo.
