Riuraus of Benicolet and Montitxelvo Curiosity · Benicolet, La Vall d'Albaida, Valencia Image of Benicolet, not of the place itself. Traditional rustic constructions, originally built for drying raisins, characteristic of the rural landscape of the Vall d'Albaida. They protected bunches of muscatel grapes set out to dry from rain and damp, generally facing south, with an open space or drying yard in front where the fruit received direct sunlight; the largest examples have up to two sections with between ten and fourteen openings or ulls. They emerged in the 19th century amid the expansion of raisin growing, and the first documented reference appears in Madoz's geographical dictionary, in the middle of that century. Since 2007 the Riuraus Vius association has promoted their conservation as cultural heritage. Photo: 19Tarrestnom65 (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Benicolet
