Cave of Bolomor Nature · Tavernes de la Valldigna, La Safor, Valencia Image of Tavernes de la Valldigna, not of the place itself. The cave of Bolomor is an archaeological site about two kilometres southeast of Tavernes de la Valldigna, in the ravine of the same name, between the Mondúver massif and the Valldigna depression. It has yielded the oldest known hearth on the Iberian Peninsula, dating back 250,000 years, as well as lithic and bone remains and hominid fossils from the Lower Palaeolithic, between 350,000 and 90,000 years BC; these are the oldest settlement remains in the Comunitat Valenciana and the earliest evidence of the domestication of fire on the peninsula. Explored since the 19th century by geologists such as Vilanova i Piera, Leandro Calvo and Henri Breuil, by the early 20th century it was already one of the most important Valencian sites. In 1935, dynamite works destroyed close to 70% of the deposit. Photo: Pelayo2 (Wikimedia Commons) (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Tavernes de la Valldigna
