L'Alqueria de la Comtessa Village · Alqueria de la Comtessa (l'), La Safor, Valencia L'Alqueria de la Comtessa is a municipality in the comarca of La Safor, in the province of Valencia, situated between Gandia and Oliva, close to the coast, on flat, clayey land crossed by the Barranco de Palmera. It was an Andalusi alquería of the Duchy of Gandia that was left depopulated after the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 and was later repopulated under a settlement charter; it became independent as a parish in 1773. It lives from agriculture: irrigated orange groves and rain-fed olives and carobs. With 1,547 inhabitants, it retains the parish church of San Pedro y San Pablo, completed in 1909 on the site of an earlier temple, a rice mill from 1850 and the chapel of San Miguel Arcángel; in September it holds the traditional Porrat in honour of the Santos de la Piedra.
