Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba Monument · Alfauir, La Safor, Valencia An old Hieronymite monastery located on the hill of Cotalba, in a privileged natural setting about eight kilometres from Gandia, founded in the 14th century, in 1388, by Duke Alfons el Vell and historically linked to the Borja family. It housed the first Hieronymite community of the old Crown of Aragon, transferred from Xàbia due to the danger from pirates; the works were entrusted to Pere March, father of the poet Ausiàs March, whose family built a chapel there and buried several of its members, among them the poet's two wives. In the 16th century it came under the protection of the Borja family, and Duchess María Enríquez de Luna funded its expansion. Inhabited by around thirty monks until 1835, it has belonged since then to the Trénor family, and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1994.
